There are two types of love the Bible talks about, in this blog we are going to get to the core of love through the word of God.
When we think of love the immediate thought that comes to mind is maybe another person you care about that makes you happy.
It can feel like an overwhelming feeling of bursting joy coming from our hearts.
Love can seem easy in the moment, exciting and full of joy.
But when we truly take the time to understand love specifically from the word of God the way we view love changes.
Love is not just about the ones that are good to us, but its also about learning to love our enemies.
Two Types of love in the bible
1. The love of God – God is love
Jeremiah 1:5 says
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
There is no love greater then the love of God, we see that in his word and through his sacrifices.
God says before he formed us in the womb of our mothers he already knew us and set us apart.
I see this as something that represents love because when we are taken captive by the sins of the world we become foreigners to our creator.
And so the enemy takes advantage of that with the plot to never let us find out who we really are.
In his word God says he knew YOU!
Meaning you are alive for a reason, before he gave you parents in the world you were always his.
Now if you are a parent or you of course have parents then you know what its like to love our children or to be loved by our parents.
It’s an unexplainable love so imagine how your father in heaven that knew you before anyone else knew you loves you.
I must add that I understand some have not had good worldly parents.
But take heart because your true father from whom you truly come from is in heaven.
Your father in heaven will never disappoint or hurt you. Instead he has a plan for you filled with hopes and a future as he says in Jeremiah 29:11
Furthermore, what else do we see the Bible saying about love in its purity.
1 Corinthians 13: 4- 7 says
love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres.
Okay, lets be honest and vulnerable with this one.
When I think of those around me who I claim to love I have not always loved in this form of purity.
It’s a scripture that will truly humble you and it just really brings up that question,
“ Do you really know what love is?”
We all associate Love as just an emotion when it’s far beyond that, love is a choice.
A choice to patient when someone you love does something that frustrate you.
A choice to be kind when those around you need the gift of kindness through mercy.
Love does not envy when someone receives something we may also desire.
And love does not boast when we feel we reached the finish line while others are still running their race.
Love is not proud when problems arise rather it confronts those misunderstandings with grace.
It is a choice to honor those we love because we respect every part of who they are, the good and the ugly.
Love is a choice to serve others without self-seeking.
Additionally love Is not easily angered at the mistakes of those we choose to love because we are all humans in need of a savior.
Love keeps no record of wrong because none of us are perfect.
Love does not delight in evil and watching the downfall of others.
But we should rejoice with the truth that they who trust in the lord are victorious.
Love is a choice, to protect, to trust, to hope, and to always persevere what comes against us because true love is strong and does not easily break.
It is easy to fall short of what it really means to love those who we claim to love.
Emotions are temporary and like the seasons they are always changing.
And so our love cannot be based on only the good moments with people.
Instead its about persevering with our loved ones by grace and mercy in our most difficult moments.
2. Loving our enemies
Matthew 5: 43- 45 says
you have heard that it was said, ‘love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous.
Hurt people hurt people!
I know that there’s people that have done some unspeakable things to you.
Things that look like they could not be forgiven.
Its cost you pain, it grieves your heart, it makes you feel like you’re never going to be free from these wolves.
And through that all through Christ you have to forgive them and to forgive isn’t easy.
Allowing unforgiveness to stay in our hearts simply gives them the control over your emotions.
Forgiveness is understanding that when you forgive them you’re letting yourself free from the bondage of that trauma.
And it will not be easy and you need Jesus to help you forgive those who have hurt you and offended you.
Furthermore your biggest reason to why you need to forgive is because Jesus forgave you even when you didn’t deserve it.
Most importantly God wants to redeem you and through these situations and as you forgive and let go of those things that hurt you he will be glorified.
Because he will rescue you and redeem you from everything that was done to you.
And the things that he has for you and has promised for you are far beyond any pain and any hurt that you have experienced.
Our natural instinct is to fight evil with evil, meaning arguing back and being petty In return.
When we hurt our flesh naturally wants to react out of our pain by seeing our enemies hurt like us.
Knowing that this is just taking you into deeper bondage is the first answer to freedom from this oppression.
Walking in the ways of christ takes constant renewal of the mind and learning what the word of God speaks over our life’s.
Out of the two types of love the Bible talks about this is the one most people want to look the other way from.
Truly this very love is exactly what will lead us to looking more like christ.
As we know christ forgave us and many around us in our brokenness.
He didn’t see what the world would say is ugly but instead he saw his son/daughter.
Learning to love our enemies also begins with us.
If we do not love ourselves not only can we not love God properly but also our enemies.
See, when love really lives in you it can overcome darkness and it will not hold any record of wrongdoing.
Instead it will look beyond that, love allow us to see clearly in the spirit.
When we see clearly in the spirit we see that there is a spirit working in darkness behind those individuals.
Like us when we were lost, they are blind and if they choose to partake in wicked things they may not know of a better path with JESUS.
Additionally we know the word of God says vengeance is the Lords.
Deuteronomy 32: 35
Vengeance is mine, and recompense; their foot shall slip in due time; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things to come hasten upon them.‘
Loving our enemies is dying to our flesh, and strengthening in spirit.
Choose to walk in love as Jesus did, lets us be led by our spirits in truth and not our emotions.
In doing so, you never know who is watching and what beautiful plan of God will come to pass.
I hope this blog about two types of love in the Bible has blessed you!
